Hooked nose, jutting chin, cheeks rouged red, the figure grins beneath a tall cap whose beaded point curls over like a crest. Seated with legs crossed and a hunched back, he wears a white ruff and holds a curved stick. At his feet a small dog in a hat and ruff completes the scene. The paint, green, red, cream and black, wears away on the high points and lets the iron show through. The whole stands on a shaped, stepped base.

Doorstops made as such appeared around 1775. The first were in painted cast iron, often shaped as famous figures or animals, and production grew in the nineteenth century, notably in England and France, where makers offered characters and animals. Cast iron, heavy and stable, suits an object whose task is to hold a door. The gallery dates this one to the late nineteenth century without naming the subject, the foundry or the country, and without saying whether the polychromy is original.
