Read in English
It begins with a globe. White opaline, satin-matt, swells into a full, rounded body set on a circular base pierced with a ring of small holes, then narrows to a short neck that vanishes beneath a tall conical shade. The fabric, a slightly greyed white with a visible weave, is not the original. The milky glass has the softness of porcelain and seems made to diffuse light rather than to dazzle. On the black flex, a small box with three keys controls the triple lighting.
The gallery attributes the lamp to Max Ingrand for Fontana Arte, the title spelling the name Imgrand. Born in 1908, died in 1969, Ingrand came from stained glass; according to several sources he took up the artistic direction of the Milanese house in 1954 and held it until 1967. Fontana Arte had been founded in Milan in 1932 around Gio Ponti, Luigi Fontana and Pietro Chiesa. It was for this house that Ingrand designed the Fontana lamp in 1954, in blown white glass, its globe and shade lit separately. The exact model of this example remains to be identified.
