Bouddha debout en bois polychrome et doré, XIXe siècle

Debout sur une fleur de lotus, les mains descendues le long du corps et tenant les bords de la robe, le Bouddha s'offre de face, le visage calme sous une coiffe ceinte d'un bandeau. La robe s'évase en larges pans ondulés, et ses bordures portent un semis de petites pastilles vertes et miroitantes pris dans des rinceaux. Sur le rouge du fond, l'or s'use par plages et laisse paraître des dessous sombres. La figure repose sur un haut socle de bois noirci.

Pendant les premiers siècles, le bouddhisme se garde de figurer le Bouddha et lui préfère des symboles. Les premières images apparaissent vers le Ier siècle de notre ère dans le nord de l'Inde, à Gandhara et à Mathura, puis conservent des traits constants, la protubérance du crâne, les lobes d'oreille allongés, et des gestes codifiés, les mudras. Standing on a lotus flower, hands lowered along the body and holding the edges of the robe, the Buddha faces the viewer, his expression calm beneath a headdress bound with a band. The robe flares into broad undulating panels, and its borders carry a scatter of small green and mirrored studs set within scrolling foliage. Over the red ground the gold has worn away in patches, revealing darker layers beneath. The figure stands on a tall pedestal of blackened wood.

For the first centuries Buddhism refrained from depicting the Buddha and preferred symbols. The first images appeared around the first century of our era in northern India, at Gandhara and Mathura, and then kept constant features, the cranial protuberance and the elongated earlobes, together with codified gestures, the mudras.
