Read in English
A golden yellow glaze, streaked with brown and orange, runs over the raised scales of the fruit and pools in their hollows, where it deepens in tone. The lid lifts away at the upper third along an almost invisible line and carries the spray of bright green leaves that serves as a handle. Broad and curling, those leaves are modelled with a freedom that contrasts with the regularity of the body. The high gloss returns the light in small white flecks, as on a wet fruit.
The drageoir, forerunner of the bonbonnière, was used from the thirteenth century to present sugared almonds and spices, and the bonbonnière would later be made in glass, crystal, earthenware or porcelain. The pineapple has a history of its own: in eighteenth century England the fruit was so costly that well-off families sometimes rented one for an occasion, and its image spread through literature, art and even architecture, as at Dunmore. From the middle of that century Greatbatch and Wedgwood made pineapple-pattern pottery. No workshop is named for this Italian piece of 1964.
