Read in English
Vermilion red and deep black alternate in fine bands around this cylinder with its fitted cover, picked out with yellow lines and touches of blue-grey. In the central register, figures in motion stand out among pavilions and open architecture, drawn with an engraved line of great finesse; above and below run friezes of scrolling foliage, and the lower frieze holds a short inscription. The cover unrolls a decoration of its own. A few chips at the rim and small areas of wear show that the box has been used.
In Burma these cylindrical boxes, called kun-it, held the ingredients of betel or of pickled tea. Lacquer is attested at Bagan from the early thirteenth century. The yun style consists of engraving the surface with a stylus, then filling the incisions with colour, one shade after another, often four or five; the core is most often bamboo, sometimes wood. The listing names wood without specifying the technique, and places this box around 1920.
Sources and points to validate
