Read in English
Two handles of twisted branches coil and knot on either side of the body, as if torn from the vine that runs beneath the lip in leaves and clusters. Against a finely granulated ground, bearded masks with curling hair stand out in high relief, with a lion's mask at the centre. The gadrooned foot rests on a circular base. The grey-green patina, almost mineral, wears thin on the high points and lets a warmer tone rise through in places.
The model has an archaeological story. Around 1771 Gavin Hamilton recovered a great antique vase at Tivoli, in Hadrian's Villa. Restored for Sir William Hamilton, it went to Warwick Castle, where his nephew, the second Earl of Warwick, installed it; it now belongs to the Burrell Collection in Glasgow. The nineteenth century multiplied it in silver, cast iron, porcelain and bronze, and Charles Crozatier cast two bronze replicas for Rundell, Bridge and Rundell. No founder is named for this reduction.
